I scanned with the free online Symatec virus check which returned one file s being infected with WinAntiSpyware.

I looked up their removal instructions but when I tried to go into the registry I founf that regedit.exe has disappeared (maybe deleted by the virus?).

How do I access the Registry now?

Thank you very much

Thanks

In fact, I've just realized that it did not diappear: it just does not start. I have the same problem as

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/288871-regedit-exe-unable-locate-component.html?

Any help appreciated.

Let me be more precise:

When I enter regedit in Start/Run I get a box which (translating from French...) says:

Windows does not find regedit. Verify that you have entered the name correctly and try again. To find a file press Start/Find.

But in fact regedit.exe is in Windows\System32

Maybe it is corrupt. I tried to reinstall it according to the thread in TechSupportGuy but it did not work for me.

Help...

Regedit.exe is not a file that easily goes missing. Please run this command. It will find regedit.exe if it still exist.

Go to Start > Run - copy/paste in the following & click OK

cmd /c attrib \regedit.exe /S>\sUBs.txt&\sUBs.txt&del \sUBs.txt

It should produce a log of it's findings

Thanks for your help.

Here's what it produced:

A C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\regedit.exe
A C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\70ccc3de7e94865059fbcf2f809c03b1\regedit.exe
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\regedit.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\regedit.exe

Does it help?

Copy any of the above files to the Windows directory. That should do the trick
I shall be drinking an extra glass this Xmas to your health.

I opened the Registry!

Now, I wonder what the next surprise is going to be, because I'm sure there's a horrrrible virus lurking about.

Thank you very much for your help.
