I have a short or something in my laptop and it lead to it turning off several times... which in turn lead to corrupt a file boot my hardrive or whatever.

it won't boot to the desktop, but can run for a short period of time.

i was wondering if there was a way to use a usb transfer cable to get those files without having to boot to the desktop or have a complete running system... well... running?

If you have another hard drive to boot off of, you can hook the faulty drive up as a slave and retrieve the data off that way. If not, try hooking the hard drive up at a friends computer as a slave and retrieve the data off the faulty drive to friends drive.
