i dont know a ton about engines but i consider mysel a tinkerer and i cant figure out why my briggs and stratton 3.5 horsepower engine is doing what it is doing

the pull start works fine, but after the motor runs for about 30 seconds it shoots the pull cord out and starts grinding the gears in there
i pulled apart the starter clutch and nothings jammed up in there or anything does that nead grease or what could be ther problem?

Hi and welcome to forum

The old book I have says no oil just to clean it, is all. I would say the starter clutch needs replaced.

BG
take some wd-40 and spray it good all up around where the rope is then spray some all around the starter clutch and in the little hole on top then put some oil on top starter clutch let it drip in may have clean the hole out with little nail or something should cure it i,ve done it a 100 times
Yep, either replace the starter clutch, or clean it up and oil it (do NOT use grease, only light oil or teflon spray). Clean up the crankshaft where it slides onto with fine emery cloth or steel wool, and oil that before sliding the clutch back on.
