Realtek AC97 volumne control icon

OS is XP. Sound works fine, however, I have lost my volumne control icon from the taskbar. Attempted to place it there by going to Control Panel, Sound & Audio Devices and clicking on "Place volumne icon in taskbar". I receive a message telling me I do not have the Volumne Control Program installed. This came with the computer so I don't know what happened and I do not have an installation CD. I downloaded the Realtek AC97 driver from the website and nothing changed. I would appreciate any help in getting the icon restored. Thank you.

What do you mean by "lost" the icon. Are we to assume that you had it there at some point. And if you did, at what point did it go away?
You need to copy/expand sndvol32.exe from the WinXP CD.

Yes, I had a volumne control icon. It disappeared after I cleared the Prefetch file. I do not have an XP CD as my computer was purchased with XP already loaded and I did not receive a CD.
See if you can borrow one, but make sure it's the full commercial version, not a recovery CD.
