Re: Sticky "Is your Computer Slow"- I Bombed Big Time!

Hello:

I really messed up royally!

I was following steps for checking why computer runs slow.
(It takes 15 min for XP to start up.
Anyway, I got to the point where I can delete 'start-up' stuff, but I can't remember what I did!

I think somehow this happened:

Note: You should NOT use MSConfig to permanently disable programmes from automatically starting at boot up. This utility is meant as a trouble-shooter – not a long term solution. If you uninstall a programme that has already been disabled using MSConfig, then it’s likely there will be orphaned Registry entries left behind. These could cause potential problems when trying to start your system. Use one of the start up managers mentioned above.

I think I was at the point where I disabled some stuff.

But this is the screen I get now when I turn on the computer:

It says something about RECOVERY CONSOLE in a DOS -like ? screen.

It's all words. Then if I type in EXIT as it asks I get a quick choice of two things

1. Recovery console
2.Windows XP.:sigh:

Can somebody please help me?

Hey, choose the second option (Windows XP). If that loads the login screen then login and on the MSConfig error tick the box that says "don't show this at startup".

If you can't get windows to load, tap F8 when booting the computer to load windows in safemode and see if you can revert the changes you made(using msconfig).

Post back with more info on how far through the booting process you can get.

Thanks jamie for replying. I think I understand what you mean. I will try that.

click start-run(or press winkey+r) and type msconfig.exe, if you can't do that then go to C:/windows/ (if it's not there it's in C:/windows/system32/) and find it.

Re: Sticky "Is your Computer Slow"- I Bombed Big Time!

hi jamie! Well figured out how to do this and all is back to the regular boot.

I'm not sure what I did, but I went into 'system' and found a start up mode choice.
It was as simple as choosing from two choices of a drop-down box:

Recovery console
XP regular start up

I simply choose the XP option, applied and OKed!

There it was. Thank you for all your help and quick replies. I really value all of the admins
help and time you all take with our problems. lennon
