I have been experiencing random system restarts while playing the game Warcraft 3. It has never happened while I was not playing the game. I have completely uninstalled the game and all folders having to do with it and then reinstalled but I have the same problem. I've ran SpyBot and Adaware to no avail. It is extremely annoying.
-Windows XP Pro.
-Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz
-2G Corsair RAM
-7950GT vid. card

I don't know what else you need to know, so here is my DXDIAG log. (Just to head it off, no I am not using Daemon Tools to play the game. I own the legitimate CD and have played the game for three years before I started having this problem.)

Hi Label23, welcome to TSF...

does anything show in the Event Log relating to the times of the shutdowns?

Also, after it shutdowns the next time, check the CPU and MoBo temps in BIOS as it may be a sign of overheating.

Another thing to check is your PSU voltages..you can use a program such as SpeedFan or SensorsViewPro to gather that data.

Post back any further details please.

I'm not sure if this is what you mean by PSU voltage, but I have a 700W power supply.

I'm off to play the game where it will reboot if I'm lucky. I'll post back if it does so..

As nickster said, heat and PSU (= Power Supply) should be the most likely reasons here.

Tell us about the brand and model of your PSU : remove the side panel of your case and see what's written on the sticker on the side of the PSU.

Monitor your temps and voltages using sensorsviewpro, but double-check those readings with the ones you'll find in the bios in the hardware monitor screen. To enter the bios, repeatedly press the del key during startup.

Would be good to benchmark your voltages while running a intensive graphical application. You could run rthdribl to stress your GPU while monitoring your voltages and temperatures with sensorsviewpro

edit : while you have your case open, check that there's not too much dust in there. If you haven't cleaned it up since 3 years, now would be a good time to buy a can of compressed air and blow the dust away from the fans and heatsinks.

My power supply is the FX700-GLN model from FSP Group.

I am downloading those programs you suggested as I type.

Ok, these are my stats. The one on the left is my system idling on the desktop with FireFox running in the background. The one on the right is after 15 minutes of running rthdribl at full screen.

AFAIK that's a very good PSU. Should be able to power your (very nice btw) system. But it could be dying if you've had it for 3 years, or you may have gotten a bad one if it's brand new.

Start by running sensorsviewpro, display either the temperatures or the voltages logs and leave it on in the background. Then Run rthdribl. This software is from 2003, same date as Warcraft 3 I believe. Press B to enable bump mapping (disabled at default) and enjoy the eye-candy. You can even run 2 or 3 instances of rthdribl at the same time to stress your gpu the most. Report if you find your voltages to be unstable in sensorsviewpro. You can post a screenshot of your sensorviewpro graphs (temps and voltages) whith rthdribl running in the background.

Don't forget to check the dust inside the case and to report the infos from the hardware monitor screen in the bios.

Ok, I began my previous post before you posted those screenies (was doing 2 things at a time).

Your voltages are stable but the CPU and GPU temps are quite high. Open your case and clean any dust there could be in the fans or heatsinks (remove the power plug and touch a metal part of the case before you do so) and retry to see if your temps are a little lower.

You could also redo the test with 3 or 4 windowed instances of rthdribl. Somehow this makes my GPU reach higher temps than one single instance at fullscreen (and enable the bump mapping if it's disabled).

Edit : and your CPU being at 54°C when idle is too hot, especially for a core 2 duo. It should be less than 40°C when no programs are running (I don't believe firefox would stress it much, my P4 here is at 36°C while I'm typing this). Could you check the temperatures reported in the bios to confirm this ?

Ok, update time:

I went out and bought a can of compressed air and cleaned all the dust out of my case. There was quite a bit on around the fans, but it wasn't too bad anywhere else. So I started up my system and SensorsView still said my CPU was idling around 60 degrees. So I went into my BIOs and it said that all my temps were only around 35 degrees. So it seems that SensorsView is not giving me accurate info.

Any other tips?

I just had the crash happen again. I loaded up my BIOs temps as soon as I could, and my temps were at 36 degrees. So I would assume that means my system isn't overheating.

One of my friends suggested it could be processes trying to access the same part of my RAM at the same time and causing a crash. He didn't know how to check to see if that was the issue. Is that a possibility?

Updating the bios is a last resort solution, it's probably not needed.

Yes, it's possible sensorsviewpro doesn't give accurate information. Speeking of which, I may have given you a link to an outdated version last time. Uninstall your previous version and try with this one :
http://www.stvsoft.com/

You can also try speedfan and everest to see if they report different infos about your CPU temps and voltages.

If it's not overheating, it could still be linked to the PSU. Your video card requires 10 amps on the 12v rail if it's a regular 7950GT and your PSU only provides 15. If it's a factory overclocked model (like XFX's) it can require more than that. What's the brand and model of your video card ? Try to hook the video card power plug to another plug on the PSU (should be 4 different 12V lines) and report if it changes anything.

Try to monitor your voltages while you're playing W3. What's great with sensorsviewpro is that you can configure it to create a log file. Even if it doesn't report your cpu temp correctly, it may monitor your voltages correctly so it could be worth giving it a try.

Right-click the temp icon in the traybar and go to settings. Go to the logs tab and check enable event log. Set it to write the log every 30 seconds. Run your game then locate the log file (normally c:\program files\SensorsViewPro31\eventlog.txt) and attach it to your next post.

With sensorsviewpro you can also display nice graphs if you go to charts. Tick the box next to voltages and leave that window open then run your game for a while and try to exit before it crashes. See if your voltages remained stables.

I would also configure an alarm if your 12V line goes lower than 11.4 or higher than 12.6V (go to voltages => +12V). If the voltage drop is sudden, it may not appear in the eventlog.txt file but you should then see it reported in the AlarmLog.txt file.

Faulty ram would likely cause other random restarts problems. But to get that out of the way, download and burn memtest86+ iso on a CD and boot your computer with it. You'll have to enter the bios (repeatedly press del at startup) and set the boot priority to cd-rom first. Let memtest do 3 full passes on your ram and report if it encouters any error. You should also run windiag since it does other tests than memtest does.

Right-click "my computer" => properties => advanced => settings under startup and recovery => untick the automatically restart box. Tell us if you now have a blue screen with some infos on the error before it restarts.

Go to start => run and type eventvwr.msc /s. Check in the different sections (system, security, applications, ...) if you have errors at the times of the crashes.

I would also run a chkdsk on your system drive (and on the drive where W3 is installed if it's not the same) to check whether the reboot is not caused by some error on the disk : start => run => chkdsk c: /F /R (where c is the volume letter of your system drive). Answer no when it asks to unmount the drive then yes to schedule the scan during next startup.

Ok, sorry for the late response but I have been working a lot.

My video card is the EVGA e-GeForce 7950 GT.

I look back through my logs on SensorsView and nothing changes before the reboot. Everything remains stable (if you consider that the temperatures are wrong).

The blue screen that I get now during the reboot say:
STOP : 0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0xb5d3f71c, 0x00000000)
RTKHDAUD.sys - Address b7a7b03e Base at b7a18000 Datestamp 4642f3b3

I actually ran Memtest before I posted here and I had some errors. I can run it again and show you, if you can tell me how to make a log of it.
