Hi. Several times a day--sometimes 10 or more--my computer suddenly crashes and restarts itself. I get no blue screen or error message whatsoever. I do often get a message upon the restart that Trend-Micro PC-Cillin is reverting back to the last known good configuration, or something like that.

I don't know if this is a Windows problem, or if some other piece of software or hardware may be causing me trouble. Can anyone help?

Hi StivVid !

Random restarts without error messages are often caused by hardware problems. Start by checking your power supply and cpu temp. In a second time you may also want to check the hard drive and memory.

What's the brand and model of the computer ? If it's a custom build then post your complete system specs (follow the link in my sig) and don't forget the brand, model and wattage of the power supply (on the sticker that's on the side of the power supply when you open the computer case).

If it's a destkop then turn the computer off, unplug the power cord, open the computer case and check that there's no dust on the fans and heatsinks. If there's dust use a can of compressed air (available at your local computer or electronics shop) to clean it. Replug the computer, turn it back on and check that all the fans (CPU, video card, power supply) spin.

Enter the BIOS at startup : repeatedly press del or look for some "press xx to enter setup" message. Search for some hardware monitor or pc health status screen and report your temps, fan speeds and voltages from there.

Go to start => run and type eventvwr.msc. Check the different sections there for recent errors, double-click the error message, click on the third button on the right (this copies the information in the memory) then right-click => paste that information here.

Go to start => run and type chkdsk c: /R. The crashes will probably have caused errors on the hard drive. Usually it's only minor inconsistencies but if it founds bad clusters then you'll have to run the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic utility on the drive. If you skipped the scan's result you'll find them in the latest winlogon entry in the application section of the event viewer.

Hey there.

My apologies for taking ages to get back to you. Thanks for your response.

Here's some info that may be of help.

I built this computer myself with the following components:

Motherboard: Asus A8V Deluxe
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Memory: 1 GB RAM (2 sticks in dual channel config.)
Graphics: Visiontek Radeon 9600
Optical Drives: CDW/DVD, CD/DVDW
Hard Drives: 3 120 GB SATAj
Floppy Drive
Operating System: Windows XP Home, Service Pack 3

The power supply is not the original, since the first one crapped out on me. The one I replaced it with may not be the best. It was one of the only ones I could find locally, and I didn't really have time to wait on a mail order. It's a Jeantech JNP-400P. 400 watts.

I did have a look at the hardware monitor, and this is what it said:

CPU Temp: 41.5/106.5
MB Temp: 26/78.5
CPU Fan Speed: 3391 RPM
Chassis Fan Speed: N/A
Power Fan Speed: 1607 RPM (this was highlighted in red)
CPU Q-Fan Control: disabled
Chassis Q-Fan Control: disabled
VCore Voltage: 1.568v
3.3v Voltage: 3.424v
5v Voltage: 5.160v
12v Voltage: 12.224v

Hope that helps. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Temps and fan speeds are ok but your voltages, while still in the +/-5% ATX range, are a bit high. This indicates a low quality power supply. Your power supply is only a 70% efficient model and has only been tested at 75% load and 25°C ambient temp. Quality power supplies will have 80%+ efficiency and will deliver their rated wattage (100% load) at 50°C (closer to the actual temp inside the power supply). If you have 5 internal drives and an AGP video card the load on the +3.3 or +5V rails may be a bit too much for your supply. See if you have some friends with a good quality 500W+ power supply to test your computer with. Buy the power supply from an online shop if your local retailer doesn't have good models. Check this information for advices on good models : http://www.techsupportforum.com/f210/power-supply-information-and-selection-192217.html. Stick with good brands like Antec, FSP or Seasonic.

If your power supply is unsufficient for your rig bad voltages could have damaged your memory sticks. Download, unzip and burn memtest86+'s pre-compiled bootable .iso (.zip) using your burning software's burn from image file feature. If in doubt use (write image file to disc). Leave the CD in the drive, restart the computer, enter the BIOS at startup and set the boot order priority to CD-rom first. Leave memtest run overnight or at least 3-4 hours and report if it shows any errors.

Did you check the video card fan by opening the computer case ? The hardware monitor will only report the CPU and PSU fans. Check that there's no dust in the video card fan.

Please do the following :
Go to start => run and type eventvwr.msc. Check the different sections there for recent errors, double-click the error message, click on the third button on the right (this copies the information in the memory) then right-click => paste that information here.

Go to start => run and type chkdsk c: /R. The crashes will probably have caused errors on the hard drive. Usually it's only minor inconsistencies but if it finds bad clusters then you'll have to run the [url=http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287]HDD manufacturer's diagnostic utility
on the drive. If you skipped the scan's result you'll find them in the latest winlogon entry in the application section of the event viewer.
Use speedfan to monitor your temps and voltages while within Windows. If the +3.3, +5 or +12V are unstable it would confirm a problem with your power supply.

The most recent errors of each kind (same event source and same event ID) would have been enough, sorry about that.

You can ignore the parallel port drivers errors, I doubt you have a parallel printer and it probably only means your parallel port is disabled in the BIOS.

The faulting module... fault address... errors could be related to a failing memory stick.

The \Device\Scsi\iviVD1 errors are related to InterVideo WinDVD, iviVD.sys is a virtual disk driver that's installed with the program. The error is probably only a consequence of your other crashes. If the errors keep appearing try reinstallig WinDVD once you've solved your random restarts problem.

Most important thing for now is that you test your memory with memtest to determine whether any of your memory sticks got damaged and test your computer with a known good power supply. You'll need to do both, using an underpowered power supply with good ram or failing ram sticks with a good power supply would still cause crashes.

Ok. I'll order a new power supply today, and run memtest tonight. Thanks a million for all your help.

Ran memtest for 4 1/2 hours or so... no errors.

Took a look at the graphics card, but there's no fan on it--just a big heat sink.

Ordered a new power supply--Corsair HX520W.

Don't forget to run the chkdsk c: /R scan and report the results. If you skipped the results they'll be in the event viewer (start => run => eventvwr.msc) in the latest winlogon entry in the application subsection once you're back in Windows after the scan.

You may also want to uninstall/reinstall the latest versions of firefox and acrobat reader since those were the 2 programs crashing in the event viewer.

If possible I would have logged the voltages with speedfan and tested the computer with another PSU before buying a new one, we can't be 100% sure yet that the crashes were power related, but that Corsair is a good pick that will provide better voltages and allow for future upgrades as long as you stay in the standard video card range.

Minor inconsistencies and unused index entries are a result of your random crashes, free space marked as allocated is more unusual but no big deal, could still be a consequence of your crashes (Windows doesn't have the time to close all files and write all data before the computer crashes). There's no bad sectors which is a good thing. Each time your computer crashes you should run chkdsk c: /F (faster than /R since it doesn't search the drive for bad clusters) to repair those inconsistencies. It will prevent additional issues linked to errors in the file system from happening.

Tell us how it goes with the new PSU once you've installed it.

Ok. Sounds good, I guess.

I just uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox and Acrobat.

Will let you know how the new PSU works out.

Thanks for everything.

I know it's been awhile, but... The new power supply didn't fix the problem. I've been limping along restarting the computer several times a day. Finally got fed up with it and tried to do a repair installation of Windows XP. Things seem to be a bit more stable, but now the computer sometimes crashes and displays a blue screen with an error message and something about a memory dump. Only thing to do when that happens is hit the reset button and try again. Any help?

Hi again StivVid ! Sorry to hear your computer's still having troubles.

If you get blue error screens we can analyze the memory dumps to find out more about the crashes. Browse to c:\windows\minidump, zip all the .dmp files you'll find there and attach the .zip file to your next post using the manage attachments button (click on post reply or go advanced to see that button).

Hey, justpassingby. Good to hear from you again. Got another blue screen a few minutes after I posted. Anyway... here's the zip you asked for. Cheers.

All 4 BSOD's are bad pool header, check quizme1220's advice in this thread and see if it could apply to your case :
http://www.techsupportforum.com/f10/stop-0x19-bad_pool_header-282054.html

Are there any devices with a yellow or red icon in the device manager ? (start => run => devmgmt.msc).

Make sure you've installed the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard : http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=A8V Deluxe
You may also want to flash the BIOS to the latest revision.

Yep. I've got 2 red x's in the device manager. One's on the Network Adapters--1394 Net Adapter, the other is on Windows Portable Devices--Nokia 6300. As far as I can tell, all my drivers are up to date. I have noticed, however, that my BIOS is listed as a beta version on the Asus website. Should I revert to the last non-beta version?

Also... checked out that other thread. My video drivers are up to date, and I'm not running Windows Live Messenger.

Hmmm...

Just before writing this, there was an error message about my system recovering from a serious failure. Here's the info. Hope it helps.

It's still a code 19 = bad pool header.

You'll need to get rid of those 2 problematic devices in the device manager, IRQ conflicts can cause bad pool headers. What's the device status when you double click them ?

If you don't use the nokia 6300 with your computer I would uninstall the related program (nokia PC suite or something like that). The 1394 port is the firewire port, if you have any device that use that port (camera or whatever) I would uninstall the bundled application. Restart the computer and see how it goes. If either device is still flagged then right-click => disable it and restart the computer.

Faulty ram sticks sometimes pass memtest (I can tell) so I'd try the computer with only one memory stick slot : try one stick at a time in the first DIMM slot for a day or two. I found your previous jeantech power supply in a list of PSU's to avoid so let's make sure the ram is not the problem (the ram is usually the first part to get damaged by bad voltages).

Don't know whether the beta BIOS could have something to do in this, thanks to Asus there's no release notes with the latest 2 beta versions. you could try the latest stable 1017 version. Some Asus AMD motherboard (the A8N32-sli among others) had issues with SP3 (related to the ACPI specifications) but I haven't heard anything about the A8V. The beta bios have been released prior the release of SP3 so they wouldn't help with that anyway.

A faulty driver coud also cause bad pool headers but it'll require deeper analysis that I'm capable of to isolate the driver (taken from MS : "The internal pool links must be walked to figure out a possible cause of the problem, and then special pool applied to the suspect tags or the driver verifier to a suspect driver."). If we make no progress I'll see if another staffer knows more about this.

Thought I'd give this one more shot. Still getting random crashes. At least now they're accompanied by blue screens and error messages and not just sudden restarts with no explanation. The latest error says this:

BCCode : 19 BCP1 : 00000020 BCP2 : 848F08E0 BCP3 : 848F0990
BCP4 : 0A160001 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 3_0 Product : 768_1

Hope that helps. I'm about ready to turn this computer into a boat anchor.
