The symptoms point to a failing PSU. OEM PC's use the minimum size for the included hardware. Have you added any hardware to the original configuration?
Random Loss of Power
Hi people... I have a compaq presario, and my comp shuts down randomly every couple of hours... If i simply press the power button to turn it back on, it will hang at the compaq screen. To get my comp to restart, i have to unplug the power cord from the back, press the power button a few times... replug the power cord in... Then press the power button and it will start up as if there are no problems. :4-dontkno Does anyone know what the prob is here...? thanks in advance

it had a slot for a dvd write, i added an internal one, but when i first added it, it had no problems, i have since taken that out and disabled it in the settings, but no change. other than that i just have printer, cam, heaphones.. the basics... i did upgrade memory..but it was doing that loooong before i upgraded the memory.
someone told me to take out the cmos battery for 15 mins, i did that , but no change, think it might need to be replaced?

Do you have or can you borrow a known good PSU to try? You can also test your PSU using a multi-meter.
