Random BSODs; can't complete virus scan

1687 Views 21 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  tetonbob
I've been having an ongoing issue with BSODs. It comes and goes. When I get one I usually have to restart the system many times and I usually can get back in eventually. I have tried many different virus scans, but everytime I am just about finished the blue screen appears again. I bought my computer in October and I started having trouble about the second month that I had it. Here are the results of my HijackThis. Hopefully you can help shed some light on this for me. Thanks!

Was this a new machine, purchased from a reputable retailer? Or a custom build? Or second hand machine?

If relatively new, and having this sort of problem, it should still be under warranty.

Did you install a program or piece of hardware just prior to the Blue Screen appearances?

I'm uncertain that your issue is malware related, which is what this forum specialises in.

Let's run this diagnostic tool, to assist us in finding out.

  1. Download combofix.exe to your desktop.
  2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HJT log
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

This is a Gateway Laptop that I bought from Best Buy in the middle of September. After it started happening I deleted anything that might have been causing the problem. My Anti-Spyware (Webroot) started acting up so I deleted that. I also deleted Office 2007 Beta, Daemon, and anything else that I thought might be causing it. It seemed to fix the problem, but after a week or so the blue screens came back.
When I installed Spybot Search and Destroy and ran it for the first time it said that it had already been altered and that malware might be the culprit. Whenever I do an online virus scan a bsod appears towards the end of the scan and it can't finish. I at first suspected a hardware malfunction and I performed a memory test that did not produce any problems. With the malfunction of my antivirus and antispyware along with the blue screens it leads me to believe something is causing this besides hardware. The cause of the blue screen changes everytime as well. If I can prove that hardware is causing the problem I am sure gateway would have no problem giving me a new laptop because it is brand new. I hope this information helps. Thanks for your help. Here are the results of the combofix scan:

I think I'd have spoken to the support staff at BestBuy or Gateway when these issues first arose. If it's been happening all along since you owned the machine, and you can't pinpoint an addition of software to the system as the cause, it's quite possibly hardware.

Let's see if we can eliminate malware as the source of issue.

You're right, it's doubtful cookies are causing your issue.

Clear your Firefox cookies. From the open browser, go toTools>Options>Privacy>Cookies>Clear

Let's use one more diagnostic tool, to see if anything is lurking.

Please download this tool > http://www.kztechs.com/sreng/sreng2.zip

1. Extract it to Desktop & double click SREng.exe to run it

2. Select 'Smart Scan' & tick "Verify Digital Signatures"

3. Click on the [Scan] button

4. When finished, click on the [Save Reports] button & save the log to Desktop

5. Attach the log in your next reply. Dont post it. You may need to rename it from SREngLOG.log to SREngLOG.txt

I first talked to an online Gateway tech support guy who told me to delete any programs I recently installed, which I did. That seemed to work for awhile, but it came back. I also did that memory test. I did not get the best buy warranty so Gateway is my only option.
I just ran the other scan and it told me that a registry value had an abnormal value (Default value is blank). And to check for a virus. I will try and post the screen shot. Attached is the log.

The screenshot of the alert is referring to this entry:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: acaptuser32.dll

Which from what info I was able to gather is part of Adobe's 3D Capture software.

Search for that file on your system using Start>Search>All files and folders (may be in System32), and confirm on the properties version tab that it is indeed from Adobe.

Right click on that file and go to Properties. Then go to the Version tab and see what information you can get from there (Company, Description, etc.) and post it here.

It will take me some time to review the log.
I was trying to check for some updates from Microsoft and I just found out that I can't get on there either. I get this error: 0x80072EFD error.

It tells me to fix the security settings and add the update sites to the trusted sites list, which I did. It did not help at all. Something is preventing me from getting updates to. This may be related.

Here is the info you wanted:

Company: Adobe Systems inc.
File Version: 7.0.7.6
Product Name: 3D Capture Dynamic Link Library

It is in the system32 folder.
Open HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.

Under System Tools, click on Open hosts file manager.

After it loads, click on Open in Notepad. Copy and paste the contents of that Notepad file here.
It just created a sample one. Here it is though:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

I did a CWShredder scan in safe mode and it found cws.msconfig. It did not find that file in Normal mode. What is the best way to get rid of this? This may be the cause of some of the problems.
I was able to complete a Trend Micro Online scan. It picked up a bunch of vulnerabilities but could not get much information about them except for their names. It also picked up Troj_Generic but was able to clean that without a problem. I have attached screen shots of the vulnerabilities that it could not clean up for some reason.

CWShredder can be run in safe mode, simply tell it to fix instead of scan. CoolWebSearch is not typically linked to your symptoms.

The TrendMicro results are more than likely reports based on Windows Updates, which you can't seem to get to to take care of.

There's nothing in your hosts file blocking access.

I'm going to bring out a bigger gun to do some digging:

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

OK, this finally found something that might be what we are looking for. If found a modification of Lust.258. I did a google search and nothing helpful turned up. I will attach the log.

Let's have a look at Windows Event Viewer. It might give us a clue as to what is causing these issues, as I'm still unconvinced it's malware which is causing it, though we are finding some. You may have concurrent issues. Frankly, it would be more efficient to to a repair install/nondestructive restore.

Go to Start > Run - type in eventvwr <Press Enter>

This is a picture of what the event viewer looks like.
You will see Application, Security & System listed in the left pane.
  1. In the left pane click on Application.
  2. Click the gray title "Type" at the top of the source name column in the right pane to sort by type name
Look for "Error" & double-click on the most recent 5, and evaluate the event description for any indication of the cause of the problem.
  3. Make note of the Description, EventID and Source of these Event Properties.
  4. From the right pane, doubleclick on the line where it says error & you should get a window like the example below

  5. In the upper right corner of this picture, you should see 2 arrows. One is pointing up & the other, pointing down.
There is another button below the 2 arrows. Click once on it. (this will copy some information to clipboard)
  6. Open notepad & paste the info in there. This will copy the event information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each event here

Repeat steps 1-6 for System

Also, please do this:

Create an uninstall list:

  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the button " Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and past the List from the notepad file into your post
If this problem is not malware related, then the only other ideas I would have is that the laptop is 1) Overheating or 2) the hard drive is crashing. I am not sure how to find out for sure if that is happening though. The BSODs usually happen after the laptop has been running for awhile and perhaps keep coming back until the computer has cooled down. I did get the updates to work finally after flushing the DNS and following some other instructions on the Microsoft support site. Here is the info you asked for:

One of the things I see in your Add/Remove programs list is that you have AVG Free in the list, but it doesn't appear to be active.

In addition to that, I see parts of McAfee still present in your HJT log.

Having more than one Anti-Virus on a system can cause system conflict, slowdowns and hangs. (and BSODs as well)

Choose one to keep, and uninstall the other. Or, perhaps, considering the condition of the machine, uninstall both, rebooting in between each time, and then install a fresh version. If you choose this route, you may want to first download the installer file for the Anti-Virus product you do choose to install, disconnect from the internet, then perform the uninstalls, and subsequent new install.

Since it appears as though McAfee is only partially installed, and it's not indicated in Add/Remove Programs, please do this:

Please use the instructions on this page to completely uninstall your McAfee Products.

You can then see about installing a new AntiVirus program, using any one of these:

Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available:Select one of these, or another of your choice. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

Once you've done this.....post a new HJT log, and let me know how your system is behaving.

I deleted all of my antivirus stuff and did a clean install of avast. It did find win32:ctx while scanning but it seemed to delete just fine. My system seems to be running pretty well right now. It is hard to tell though because these blue screens come and go a will. Here are the results of the new hijack this scan:

I deleted all of my antivirus stuff
This statement is worrisome. Delete indicates a hard removal. The correct term for removing a program is Uninstall. If one simply deletes a program's folder, it leaves all kinds of junk on the system that will confuse poor ol' Windows.

Just so we're clear on that....you Uninstalled, correct?

Did your system blue screen while running the Avast scan? When was the last one? Can you pinpoint it to the system being on and under duress (heavy resource usage) for a while? Using any particluar program? Or is it truly random?
