A friends E-machine,windows XP,has 512 mb ram,one factory card.

Bought a upgrade 1 gig card and the ram upgrade works fine, but the factory ram card doesnt register or show up to make it 1.5 gb.

It doesnt matter which slot is used, once the new card is put into either slot, the stock one wont show up on the Bios or showing more gig on system properties. Its only showing around 1 gig.

We thought with the new ram and the old card,it would make it around 1.5 GBs?

If we take the new 1 gig card out,and put the factory one in,it shows up as 512 again.

Crucials web site says this PC can handle 2 gigs so we are a bit stumped.

When we do the scan at crucial with both cards installed, they cant read the factory card if the upgraded one is in there. It only read the new card as well.

Thanks for any info.

Looks like the new ram is not compatible with the old. It happens,
probably some sort of voltage issue. Not uncommon...

Thanks...we are thinking of buying another 1 gig upgrade card to make it two gigs, instead of shooting halfway.

The store only had one card left so we were not able to try 2 new cards yet.

I dont want to make this topic solved yet if anyone else has more to comment on.
