i bought a laptop a couple months ago with 512 MB of RAM and one free slot. so i bought another 512 MB stick from Walmart and installed it. everything was perfect for about 2 weeks. my system ran so much faster and i loved it but all of a sudden i started having serious problems. the computer would randomly shut down 5 mins after i booted up and a blue screen would come up telling me there was an error. and no matter what i did it would happen over and over to the point that i turned my computer off and put it under the table and left it there with no intention on ever using it again. but later on i decided to remove the new memory and that solved the problem. so what i'm wondering is, can i buy 1 GB of RAM and install it in the currently full slot with no problems or will the same problem keep happening. how do i know if it will work without wasting my money?? if anybody has experienced this and solved their problem please let me know how you did it. thanks!

Did the blue screen of death leave you an error code? The Ram maybe was not compatible with your system, we they the same speeds and what brand Ram did you buy?

I think you've already gave us the answer to the problem. To me, it sounds like the other RAM stick you have purchased is not the same brand as the stick that was previousley in your laptop. The speeds and sizes have to match, as do the manufacturer - almost all motherboards are picky about installing RAM - 95% of the time these issues can be solved by purchasing the same RAM as you started with.

Never pair unmatched RAM's; in terms of size, speeds and also manufacturers. It will stop problems like these arising for other people and yourself in the future.

For some reason i can't edit the above post, but where i said the speeds do have to match, this is only for efficiency reasons, you can actually run two different speeds of RAM at the same time - they just run at the slowest RAM speed that the sticks run at.

It appears you can use a bigger stick-

Memory finder

The memory from walmart is under warranty, return it and try another stick. I assume you bought the laptop from there?

Also there might be another issue with a needed updated bios:

Toshiba bios

Satellite A105-S2101, A105-S2121, A105-S2131, A105-S2141
DOWNLOAD BIOS v1.10
CHANGELOG
Corrected an issue where F1 and F2 error messages were displayed after restarting, on computers without TOSHIBA Power Saver.
Corrected an anomaly where the computer shuts down, instead of transitioning from standby to hibernation properly.
A change was made to the maximum and minimum shared VRAM sizes.
Corrected an intermittent auto shutdown issue that occurred when the F2 hotkey was continually depressed before the LCD turned on.
