RAM can it freeze xp install?

i have a problem with installing xp on a new system, it will get to loading kernal sumthing then freeze i took out one stick and it got past formating then to copying files it will get to 2% roughly and freeze at copying cinemst2.sys ill skip a few more and eventualy stop. ive been told its most likely a memory problem from 2 different people now.
