Raid test question

I have a sabertooth x58 board i have 2 WD 500GB HDD that i connected to the marvell sata 6.0Gb/s connectors I proceeded to then set them up in a raid 1 configuration.

My question is how can i test to see if the raid is working properly?

I have tried disconnecting a drive then reconnecting it, but when i boot into the raid utilitities (ctrl-m) it shows that both drives are degraded as apposed to one functional and one degraded.
Now I am thinking this may not be the proper way to test it but the software doesn't give me the option to fake a failure like i have read other controllers do.

Also can you rename the Virtual Drive after it has been built or can it only be named when the raid is first set-up?
