Hi Folks,

I have a Seagate ST3160812AS HDD (SATA II, 160 GB, 8 MB Cach, 300 MB/s). I want to RAID 1 it with another disk but cannot find an identical one (it's a year since I bought it). Is is possible to RAID 1 with another non-identical drive and if so, how similar does it have to be?

Cheers,

Rob

It is possible to mix your drives, the main thing you want to look at is you keep them the same size so you don't waste space as the array will be configured as 2X the smallest drive , so if you get a 200g drive you will only be using 160G of it. you also want to try to keep the speeds about the same. if you are using the SATA 2 on a SATA 1 controller you shouldn't have any problems using an additional SATA1 drive. RAID1 is a little more forgiving than RAID0

Is what blackduck30 meant as showed by his subsequent statement.
