Personally, I'd opt for a faster drive and a backup drive, there are very few instances where you need the speed boost. RAID levels described is a pretty good description of the various levels. FWIW, the only worthwhile one IMO is RAID-5.

My main machine here has 1/2 a TB, 200gig, 160gig, 120gig, and 60gig drives. :) It's backed up to three USB 2.0 120gig disks, as well as critical files being backed up daily onto two other machines in the network.

Just because your paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you! :D
