When you install Windows 7 it wipes your drive of all files and programs. After you have run the adviser to see if your computer is compatible with 7 here is a good guide to upgrading.

If your mobo can handle it Windows 32 bit can read up to 3.5 GB RAM. I'm getting ready to watch a basketball game but will check it out at half time.
Run the crucial system scanner. this will tell you what the maximum amount of RAM your motherboard can support and the upgrade options if any
: Will my system recognize the maximum upgrade?
A: Possibly
How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found at Crucial FAQ - Answer
