You can change editing options in Word. Look for Editing options in the Options dialog box and check the option Typing replaces selected text.

V.random and probs something i've overlooked but here goes...
Basically i'm having problems deleting text within a word document.... hear me out
When i highlight text and then go to delete it using backspace... it wont delete, but it will with the del. key
Same deal when i highlight text and then type something to replace it... means i have to del. the text the rewrite ... which is annoying
Hopefully some1 knows if this is a setting or something that i've changed - its been like this for as long as i can remember and its not bothered me *too* much... but now i'm having to edit a dissertation which would be a lot more convenient if i could highlight and replace the text
