PSU Confussion

1295 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Tumbleweed36
I bought a new motherboard (ASRock K8NF6G-VSTA) and am a little confused on the type of power supply to use with it.

The manual states that it eeds an ATX 20 pin psu to power it (this bit I understand). It also says 'please note that it is necessary to connect a power supply with ATX 12V plug to this connector' (drawing of a square 4 pin connector). 'Failure to do so will cause power up faliure'.

My question is do I need a psu with the 20 pin connector AND a 4 pin connector or is this trying to tell me that it's optional to use a 20 pin connector OR a 4 pin connector?

(Wish they would explain more clearly what they mean, we are not all computer geniuses). :sigh:

Hi,

You need a power supply that has both the 20 pin connector and the 12 volt (square like) molex plug to be connected. Most modern power supplies have these. Many (not all) modern power supplies that have the 24 pin connector will also work since several have an end plug that is removable so they fit in a 20 pin motherboard.

Please take a few minutes and read the power supply information under my signature area and this will help you to understand more about power supplies. I would recommend that before you start to purchase a power supply. Be sure to use the Power Supply Calculator at the end of the formal document and then add 30% to that number so you know what size you need. The number you get in that is the bare minimum you need to run your computer.

Please post back with questions/concerns.

Hi,

When you get it done and then have questions, please ask before you buy something that is not in your best interest. We will be happy to work with you (or any tech on here will if I am not on) to assist you in selecting the proper unit for your rig. Have a great evening.
