hello, i have searched this problem on here and i have gotten some info. But i haven't seen on here that the ps3 freezes when I play a video game but i can play a blue-ray disc from start to end without any problems. It is in a well ventilated place and i have not dropped it. Any info would be perfect. Thank you. Scott

Hey mate, Welcome to TSF

Try this guide first, its worked on other "PS3 Freezing" issues so it may help here. You'll need to enter what is called the "Recovery Mode".

To enter Recovery Mode or Safe Mode

- First off, turn off your PS3...
- Hold the power button until you hear a beep and it shuts off
- Hold the power button again and keep holding it until you hear 2 beeps. If you hear that, let go and on your TV, you should see that the PS3 is in recovery mode.

Insert your USB cord to the PS3 controller and press the PS Button. You will be seeing six different options:

1. Restart System
2. Restore Default Settings
3. Restore File System
4. Rebuild Database
5. Restore PS3
6. System Update

Select Options 3 and 4. I will explain what they do.

3. Restore File System: This will restore the file system on the hard drive for corrupted files and any operating system bugs will be repaired when doing this option. If your Blu-Ray can't read discs for a disc error, then this MAY fix your problem. But it fixes software problems such as freezing, drive errors, and possibly data being corrupt all the time. (Note: this will not fix corrupted data.)

4. Rebuild Databse: This is just basically to rebuild the database for the OS, such as PSN messages, etc. (You will lose any PSN messages and possibly trophies if they haven't been synced beforehand).

Option 5 will wipe the PS3 and reset it to default - only choose this if the other options don't work (and before you choose this, back up your saves and profiles otherwise they will be lost in the procedure).

So, try the options 3 & 4 and see if that makes a difference.

Ok so tried that restart you mentioned, but it did not work. I did it step by step beeps and all, and all it does is restart the system. I don't get to see the reformat menu mentioned. Any other ideas or tips? I really miss that damn machine lol.

I've done that bit as well. Hold until beep and off. Then hold on till it beeps twice. It beeps first time when it comes on,followed by the disk spinning (spinning noise) then it beeps again then it turns on like normal; only thing is that when it turns on there is a "read the manuel" before operating stuff. If I hold the power button for any much longer then that second beep it just shuts off. So ummm, I feel kinda lost, why would my ps3 screw with me? Also I should mention that after trying this trick I assume the system reverts back to default settings (resets themes, network settings, and I don't know what else). Hope this helps you help me figure this out. Thanks in advance whether we fix this or not : )

Hey,

I think when it reboots, the double beep should be consecutive rather than with the disk spinning..

What Generation is the PS3?

@vwillis - Freezing can be caused by a few different issues ranging from the simple case of Overheating up to glitches in the PS3 Hard-drive's File System. I tend to try and eliminate them by trying a few common and effective fixes.
