Critical tasks: These are created automatically after you have developed your WBS and created the dependencies (relationships, links) between your tasks. By default, Project does not display critical tasks (shaded red) in the Gantt chart view. You must format the Gantt chart to see the critical tasks as shaded red bars. R click in the chart area and select Format. Follow the steps of the Wizard.
External tasks: These are created and formatted automatically when you create an external link between two tasks in different project files (*.mpp).
Highlighted tasks: These are displayed as the result of running a filter. In the filter dialog box, there will be a check box to display the result of the filter as being highlighted and not hide the other records.
