On my first build I donored the OEM hard drive from an HP pavillion to my new computer, but had to buy 'XP Home' retail and do a repair install to be able to reuse the HD and save all programs that came with the HP pavillion.
Recently, that drive went bad.
Can I still use that retail 'XP Home' to install OS on a new hard drive with no problems or will I be stuck in confirmation ID retrieval hell just to tell Microsoft that I'm the same turkey who bought their OS 3 years ago?

I would try it and see if it allows you to register the product. If not, itll ask you to contact microsoft, who should give you a key once you explain fully the situation.

Even if it doesnt allow you to register, you still have 30days in which to do so, so then you can rescue docs etc and wipe the HD

My bet, you'll be able to activate XP online, if not a phone call to MS and about 20 minutes and everthing will be fine
