hello
I am no computer guru so here is what i got. I have an intel pentium 4 1.8GHz processor. (Info of processor currently installed)

The motherboard has a 478-pin zero insertion force (ZIF) socket that supports a single Intel® Pentium® 4 processor. The standard host bus speed of the motherboard is 100 megahertz (MHz). However, the Pentium 4 processor uses a dual-clock, un-pipelined processing method that achieves system bus speeds up to 400 MHz.

I broke it removing it from the motherboard. What can I replace it with that will work with my motherboard. Does it have to be A 1.8 GHz or can it be a 2.8 or larger.
Also does the bus speed matter?
Any help would be grateful?? I found some on ebay but before I purchase I would like to buy the best I can that will still work..

Looks like it has a Northwood 1.8 which means you may be able to go to a Northwood 2.4 but I doubt you really see that much difference.
On a OEM system such as Gateway, Dell, HP your limited by the OEM Bios which is usually more restrictive then the chip set and a cpu upgrade can turn into a trail and error experiment. You could try Emailing gateway support to see if they will tell you what the board will support but I don't in the end you will see a large increase.
Just to note an entry level system today is much more powerful then what you could expect to see on this platform so take that into consideration when making your decision.
