not really sure what you're getting at here?? There's hundreds of processes which can run on XP but the more you have running at the same time, the more strain you put on your CPU and memory so the best idea is to have as few as possible running i.e: when my system starts, I have 29 processes running.

Quite a few of the processes which run are vital and cannot be closed but many of the items are added by third party software and that can have a detrimental impact on your system stability depending on resources available. Programs like Norton and McAfee are particularly bad for having many processes running but there are alternatives available.
