The Windows XP newsgroups have loads of messages from people who have bumped into problems installing Service Pack 1. I continue to recommend SP1 strongly to everyone who uses Windows XP. But I'm going to hedge that recommendation for one, very narrow, group of users: people who use Outlook Express with multiple identities. Apparently, SP1 stomps on the feature that allows you to switch OE identities, always returning you to the initial identity. Details here. http://groups.google.com/[email protected]#link1

There are some other minor annoyances. For example, if you use MusicMatch, you may have problems playing licensed WMA fileshttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q327991 . Your IntelliMouse optical mouse may go screwyhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q327808 . If you installed SP1 on an HP Pavilion or Presario 6300 computer, and it slowed down horrendously, check out this HP advisory http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/support_doc/bph07866.html . If you've hit some other weird problem with SP1, either during or after installation, look here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q324722 .

By and large, though, SP1 (in my experience) is working quite well, considering how many people have installed it, and how few instances of extreme panic can be found in the newsgroups. As always, if you have problems, you should check first at the WOPR Lounge.

One of the great benefits to installing Windows XP SP1 is that Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 comes along for the ride: when you get WinXP SP1, you automatically get IE 6 SP1, without lifting a finger.

If you've decided to forego WinXP SP1, for whatever reason, it'd be well worth your while to install IE 6 SP1, if only for the security patches. Hit this site for details.http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/wwwthreads.pl
