I had win XP (NTFS fs) installed on my 40 gig hd and after rebooting one time I got the message, Missing or corrupted file hal.dll ,reinstall or replace this file. Well I did some research and found others had this mysterious problem but nothing I did worked to fix it, fixboot, fixmbr, expand hal.dl_ from XP pro cd and even copying the file from another XP pro installation.

I gave up on fixing so I formatted everything and tried installing win98se, then win98, then win2000 then win95... all fail and crash horribly somewhere in their installation or 1st time boots. Now my system in fdisk thinks my drive is a 20gig drive! What's going on?

I think it's my boot sector, I've scanned for viruses and found none. I'm not sure how to fix this problem and make this hd useful once again. Any free programs or website out there that may help?

Thanks,

Welcome pragmatist..................:D

I would try writing zeros to the drive and starting anew!

What brand of hard drive are you using?

Go to www.maxtor.com and download their diagnostics. You can do a full test of the drive, and there's also an option to zero the drive.
