Hey am trying to play shogun 2 total war on a laptop, its not the best! Some times i can play it for hours with no problems and sometimes it locks up to a black screen during game play or idle on main menu.I am confident its not overheating as i have a huge fan under it but cant moniter the gpu temp no matter what program i try use.

I tryed doing a hp restore but that didnt help,i then formated and installed win 7 64 removing all hp bloatware but still have the same problem,am sure all drivers are upto date

can i run it test:

Hello and welcome to TSF!

I haven't had problems with using the same integrated graphics you have. Make sure you have the latest Catalyst drivers from AMD. You may also try reinstalling the game or running as Administrator (Right click to find this option)
ive tryed all that,thanks
Have you used a can of compressed air and blown the dust out of the vents? Are you able to check the Cpus temp? Did you try Cpu-z to check the temp of the Gpu?
I agree with AMD man , cpu-z is a great way to get temperature readings !

Opps! I meant Gpu-z and Cpu-z!
Click the Sensors tab at the top.
Also with 32 bit bus width and only 3.2 GB/s bandwidth your game play will not be very good at all.

its weird,it can play ok for hours but then crash at random times

there are a few issues in the event viewer that i have no idea how to fix

also when i have teamspeak or any other voice program runing it also crashs while playing the game, but its a different crash
The thing with the site Can you run it, is that they always take the maximum values of anything. SO with your graphics they take what RAM can be shared with the dedicated VRAM on the video card and add them together. They also just account for for the shader version it can support and not the performance.

A site I like is thus.
YouGamers - Shogun 2: Total War System Requirements
i know its a crapy laptop but theres times a can play mp battles for hours with no crashs in game or on main menu, then some days ill get 1-3 crashs, then you got today where it crashed 4 battles straight and twice in main menu

i think even though the laptop is crap, maybe theres something causing the crash and its not the spec at fault?

here are the results from that site

First off I want to get the drivers re-installed if possible. Lets try to eliminate that.

ATI Radeon Mobile 4200 64 bit

Could you also post the make and model of your laptop if I did miss it?

Can you screenshot the errors you might be getting if possible?

If you don't want to wait go into:
Start Menu
type "event viewer"
Event viewer local (top right) double click it

see if you can find any errors and just copy and paste the error as its easier for to be able to search it up and research if i can copy and paste the words too.

Tryed the driver again,no luck.I tryed removing the driver before in device manager then removing left over folders and reinstalling with no luck.

The laptop model is : hp pavilion dv6-2020sa entertainment notebook pc

The crashs have got alot worse since yesterday, the game was playable now its not.Its crashing on the main menu or half way into mp battle, the crashs are either a black screen were the laptop has locked up and i need to hold power button to shutdown. The other crash is in the screenie, this crash has started to happen more, the screenie was just after the game loading screen.I had to hold the power button to shutdown

Try the driver uninstall with Driver Sweeper first. I have to run an errand first I'll be back in a bit and maybe think of something else.
