I havve a compaq laptop and its running Windows XP i had recently bought an External hardrive. The hardrive is a 250gb beyond Micro external hardrive... i ran the driver disk etc but it doesnt seem to recognize the drive, i am totally new at this , was there something else i should have done?

Did you connect it through USB port?

Is there any pop-up notice when you connected the drive? Like "The device is not working properly"?

Go to Control Panel-> System-> Hardware-> Device Manager, check under the Universal Serial Bus Controler if there's anything unsual (to see if any device is not working properly)

Yes i did and i heard the sound but nothing showed up and when i go to the device manager i see the device but it does not show up under my computer.

Do you have service pack 1 or 2 installed as XP needs it to recognize large drives?

the drive needs to be partitioned and formatted to be "seen" under "My Computer"


you can do this from with disk management
