I have had issues with Nero before like that.
I finally had enough and got rid of it but that is a different story.

Give this a try it should work.
It is what I needed to do with Nero.
Goto device manager and uninstall the drive and then reboot.
Windows will relocate the drive when it restarts and all should work again.

Below is a link that could be helpful.
It shows that it is for vista but it is originally caused in XP and thus will apply.
I know that the top portion is correct but the devcon section on the bottom may or may not produce results in XP. Im on Vista right now and cant check.

This link may offer some additional info with Nero.

If that doesnt help.
Do you happen to have another DVD drive that you can swap in and see if it has the same issue?
If not that then could you possibly try that drive in another computer?
It is possible that the drive is starting to have issues.

The only other thing that I can think of offhand would be to try to uninstall Nero and see how it works. (You may need to repeat the uninstall drive in devive mgr. procedure again after.)
Like I said I HAD Nero and these are some of the reasons that I got rid of it.
