Basically, I have a HP Pavilion laptop, only 4 months old, pretty good specs, running on windows vista. At first, it was working like a dream, and I didnt believe what I was hearing about problems with vista. However, recently, I have noticed that anything I plug in2 any of the usb drives (be it ipod, external hard drive, or even a brand new printer) isnt installing. They are recognised alright, but instead of installing automatically, I am prompted for a disc, and even for things which I do have the disc (eg printer), it still does not work. Things that were used before this problem cropped up, eg another ipod, another printer, a mouse, are working fine. I have spoken to HP, Microsoft, the printer manufacturers, tech guys, everyone, and the best advice I got was to backup my data and wipe everything and start again. But seeing as I can't use an external hard drive, this could prove tedious and frustrating. I would be eternally gr8ful to any1 who could offer me anything to help me out of this bind!

Hi and welcome to TSF.
You actually put two copies in Removable media and one in Vista support so I've deleted the ones in Removable media. Please do not double post in future as this causes confusion for the people trying to help you and ultimately you. If a similar situation arises in the future post where you think best and ask a Mod to check it for you. Thanks.

I tried it, but it doesn't seem 2 have done anything. Whenever I try to install the Epson USB Printer(composite Device) from the device manager, it says installing software, but then ays that it encountered an error, that the required section wasn't found in the INF, watever that is.

I have the same problem. Relatively new laptop running Vista and suddenly anything I connect to USB gives this error. I've searched a few places for the solution, and it seems to be either install this update, or reinstall windows. Reinstalling windows is not an option for me. So when I download this update and try to install it, I get the message "The update does not apply to your system."

Can anyone help me?
