Installed and ran a legitimately purchased copy of The Sims 3.

The program installs fine, plays intro movie, and begins to run; however, after selecting a game, it begins to load and crashes at approximataely 10% of the load bar is filled up.

I am running 64bit windows 7 on an intel i5 m560 2.67ghz, it's a thinkpad, 4gb ram, not sure how to find graphics card specifications.

I have downloaded all of the latest patches via EA's d/l manager.

Any advice?

Hello heliotrope.

Try looking here and here.

The Sims 3 System Requirements:
Operating system Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or Windows 7 CPU Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent
2.0GHz (XP)
2.4GHz (Vista or 7) [If built-in graphics chipsets then 2.6 GHz Pentium D CPU, or 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, or equivalent.] Memory 1 GB (XP)
1.5GB (Vista or 7) [If built-in graphics then add 0.5 GB additional RAM] Hard drive space 6.1GB or more for extra content Graphics hardware DirectX 9.0c compatible card with 128 MB RAM (NVIDIA FX 5900/ATI 9500 or better) and support for Pixel Shader 2.0 Sound hardware 100% DirectX 9.0c compatible card
As far as the system specs you've provided, your system meets the requirements. However, do try to find out which video card your currently using.
