I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop running on Windows XP Home edition. For some reason since a few days, there is no volume control in the task tray, and neither is any volume control in the control panel enabled. Also, when I want to put the system on stand by or hibernate it, that option is also disabled.

I have a lot of music and movies which I cannot listen to on my laptop anymore.

I have also not installed/ uninstalled any program in a long time

Do you have anything like PowerDVD 8.0 Ultra on the computer?

What you have to do is open each program that you have used lately and check the properties to see if this program has captured the sound port or if the sound port has been changed. Some programs do this without anybody knowing it and this messes up the sound and also the icons for it. Sort of de-installs them until found.

No, that didn't work... And why is the 'Stand By' option not highlighted. I either have to turn off the laptop, or let it run on max power
