Problem with external, internal drive.

So the other day my external drive died ( the physical drive ) so i decided to remove it from the housing, and put in place a new drive ( actually a older 300GB drive i had internally ) So after putting it in the new caddy, i plugged the USB in, and my computer succesfully reads it, but i cant format it DISK MANAGEMENT, anytime i try to do something it says "THIS DEVICE IS WRITE PROTECTED"

Any suggestions? the drive was a 1TB HP Simplesave, and i put a 300GB Western digital Caviar black inside of the caddy. the drive inside was a standard Western digital 1TB GREEN you would find in any standard computer store.

What is the status in Disk Management?
Unallocated, but when it does not give me a option to format it. ( I've installed new drives plenty of times ) every option is just blank. but the HDD is there, and is registering 200 something GB's
Right click on the drive letter in Disk Management. Are you then able to partition the drive?

The other option would be to connect the drive internally in your PC. Then test the drive to verify the drive is functional. Assuming that it is, you can then partition and format the HDD. Then remove and install into the case.
