Problem with external hdd on XP

835 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  keymaker
I have a Laptop (Pentium IV) and i'm running XP. I recently bought a external hdd exclosure and put an old harddrive into it. When I connect it via USB, the computer immediately picks it up and installs the drivers. It appears under device manager and is fully functional according to device manager. But the device doesn't appear in "my computer". I tried assigning a drive letter with "administration tools", but the device doesn't appear there either! Should I try formatting it? And how should I do this, since I have a laptop and can't just plug it in on the motherboard. I heard about fdisk (don't know anything about it) , but how would I use this if the computer doesn't pick up the drive?! Please help me. I'm desperate.

If the drive does not appear in Disk Management but the drive enclosure controller appears in Device Manager I would have to say either the drive is bad or not jumpered correctly. Make sure the drive in the external enclosure is jumpered as Master. Not CS or Slave.
to see if the hdd is bad, download the diagnostics utility for the hdd from the manufacturer's website if yo dont have it already. then bootup with it and follow the onscreen instructions and test your external hdd for any errors.
