Problem using the latest nVidia GeForce FX drivers

I recently reformatted and reinstalled Windows on my system. I am running an AMD Athlon 64 1.9ghz with 1gb RAM and GeForce FX5200 (which, judging by the results I've found when searching for my error, is utterly typical). I did the reinstall (Windows XP Pro), updated to Service Pack 2, installed the VIA 4-in-1 chipset drivers (I am using a VIA motherboard) and tried to install the newest drivers for my graphics card.

Upon reboot, I was stuck in 640x480 and 16-colors. Windows Help has an entry on this symptom, but (as usual) it was completely unuseful and following the steps did not correct the issue or even suggest an explanation for it. I have been mostly unsuccessful searching for this problem online as well. Bizarrely enough, if I roll back the drivers to the default ones, it works fine. It is only when I try to use the newest drivers that problems appear.

Anyone have ideas about this? I'm at loose ends.
