problem installing hp on win95

i am trying to install HP deskjet 1220c on my PC running win95 and when i add a new printer it tries to find drivers i didn't have. i've looked on the net for them and have downloaded them etc, but i'm not sure if they are working as after I install the printer it doesn't print in colour and i can't press the 'properties' button (when i go to print from an application eg paint, msword, and also i can't run troubleshooting from control panel/printer eg line up ink jets etc) to choose such things as colour management, paper size etc. any help is greatly appreciated. :4-dontkno
