I recently figured out Privoxy was causing certain websites to not load properly. It seems I can either use filters to stop this from happening or simply uninstall Privoxy. The latter seems easier. To make sure uninstalling it wouldn't cause any problems, I initially disabled it. This caused some websites like Reddit to not load at all. The error was something about proxy settings. How can I fix this? Will uninstalling the program stop this from happening? Thanks.

Here is the error:

"The proxy server is refusing connections

Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.

Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.
Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is
working."

I made a mistake above saying when I disabled it I got these problems. Disabling Privoxy allows me to access certain features of sites that I can't when Privoxy is enabled (e.g. Myspace's music player). It's when I close the program that most websites won't load.

It seems like when I installed Privoxy, I also did something else like edited a text file. My best guess would be that I need to undo that along with uninstalling Privoxy to be able to use the internet without Privoxy being open.

Here is Chrome's error message:

"Unable to connect to the proxy server

A proxy server is a server that acts as an intermediary between your computer and other servers. Right now, your system is configured to use a proxy, but Google Chrome can't connect to it.

Here are some suggestions:

If you use a proxy server, check your proxy settings or check with your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working.

If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server, try the following steps: Go to Wrench menu > Options > Under the Hood > Change proxy settings > LAN Settings and deselect "Use a proxy server for your LAN."

Error 130 (net::ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED): Proxy server connection failed."

How can I fix this?

Hi,

What is the proxy that you are using? I want to try it on my computer and see if I can get some of the same results. Also, have you tried just setting up the proxy in the network settings of Firefox, and see if you are able to connect to thing directly through it?

Cheers!

I can't answer your question as I don't fully understand how this works. I think a year ago I ran into an article explaining what to do if you wanted to turn of the part of Vista that annoyingly freezes everything to ask your permission to open a program. They recommended installing a program called Privoxy so I did just that.
