In Properties under Print, there are options to lessen the resolution and lightness etc. But whenever I close and reopen, the default settings are restored (600 DPI etc.)! Is there a way to keep my personal settings?

What type of printer driver is installed? I know sometimes setting defaults resetting is an issue with a driver rather than the application.
