Printer server

For some reason , out of the blue my printer server (Windows 2000) on my home network has become all but impossible to access. I have tried everything that I can think of to correct the problem including, changing the computer name, changing the group name, but to no avail.

I did find that when the computer reboots (server) and is at the loggin screen (waiting for the password to be entered), all the other computers can connect without issue. However, after I enter the password and finish loggin, the computer is no longer accessible.

The server can at any time connect to any of the other computers on the network, just not the other way round. It appears as if the computer will not allow any connections using the name and password that the server is already using. In other words when I log into the server and type in name: xyz and password 123, then from another computer try and connect entering the same name and password, its a "no go". This is how I have been doing it for the past two years without issue.

Any Ideas? Thanks!

did you install any firewalls recently?

Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm or any of those along these line will prevent you from accessing the computer.
Did you recently update with the W2k SP4 Rollup? This update has been causing some folks unusual problems.

Thanks for the reply, but I checked and that update is not installed.

I run Norton Internet Security, but not on the machine in question. I have done so for the past few years. Even if the firewall is turned off, nothing changes. One computer on the network runs only AVG with out any firewall and it too, experiences the same problem.

Thanks.
What is the exact error message you get?

Have you tried creating an account on the 2K machine that matches the logon name/password for the connecting machine? This will bypass the need for any passwords on the 2K machine for connecting machines.

The current user name and password is the same on the server as my main computer. I have even tried adding another user name and password, but no luck. Note: I do on ocassion actually get to the point where it asks for my name and password but will go no further. Almost as if I were typing it in incorrect.
Here are the two errors I see. The first one is from one computer running 2000 and the other from my main computer running XP Pro.

Thanks

Odd I replied to this last night. I checked the post this morning and everything was there. Tried to access the board earlier and it said:

There seems to have been a slight problem with the Tech Support Forum database.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

Now it seems that the database has reverted to last night's backup.

Anyhow, check the server services to make sure it has started.

Also check the local security policy and make sure the user is allowed to access the computer from the network and that you are not denying that user access to other stuff.

Thanks for that reply! You may have given me the clue I was looking for. I did how ever "reformatt" and install windows as I needed to resolve the problem in short order. I really hate to do that with out making an attempt to resolve the problem first, and there by actually learn something in the process.
The server also hosts "Battlefield 1942/ Desert Combat" online and until now has been "offline".

Thanks again.
