If your printer is usb and parallel, try the opposite of which you are using currently. If it is either only, try another cable. sounds like the printer to me- if new cable don't work, take it to a friends house and plug it in to their box and try it.

If it isn't supported under XP I would get another printer anyway.

Cool. I was seen once at work slamming a mouse against a dumpster by the cord. Funny thing was it turned out being the plug on the motherboard.
