For 5 days I have been trying to set up a new printer. It is a Canon Pixma MG2965 model.

So far I have tried the following:

- installed about 15 times from the CD, the Canon website and links sent by Canon. Usually I get to the end and it says installed successfully but when I try to use there is a message about drivers not installed or similar

- I have uninstalled all HP software (previous printer)

- Done a "clean reboot"

- disabled the Windows firewall and Kaspersky anti virus while installing

- unplugged the USB cable, turned the PC on and off and changed the cable. The printer did not come with a USB cable, presumably because it is a wifi printer but will also print by cable.

- downloaded several driver fix type programs

- Uninstalled Windows service pack 1 (reinstalled again)

- made changes in the registry based on a google search

Probably done a couple of other things I have forgotten?

I am using Windows 7 Professional.

Tried the Windows troubleshooting tool.

I have had numerous interactions with Canon who have now said they cant help because I was able to print from my Tablet. They say that shows there is nothing wrong with the printer.

I am reading that as a last resort I should uninstall and reinstall Windows 7 but I dont have a disc as the PC came with it preloaded. Not sure I am comfortable about doing that without a disc.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated!!

Have you ever printed from this printer with cable connection? Have you tried another USB cable?
No I have not been able to print using a USB cable and yes I have tried a different cable with the same result.

The printer did not come with a cable so I first used my HP cable and then another blue I found that I cant recall what it was attached to.

During the installation process it says the printer is recognized so I don't think it is a problem with the cable.

What else is plugged in to computer that is connected by USB port?
I had a similar problem recently on installing a Canon All-in-One printer to a system that had a Lexmark Laser Printer and an External Hard Drive connected. After substantial hair pulling I realized that because the Canon has multiple ports for camera card and usb plug, occasionally Windows sees the printer as a hard drive and not to many pcs will allow more than 1 external hard drive attached even today. The workaround was plugging the external drive to the front Usb ports and the Canon Printer to the back ports and you may have some variation of this issue so hopefully this may start ypou looking in another direction.

When I go into the control panel to Printers and devices and click on "Printer Properties" the message is "Printer driver not installed"

When I try to print a document the message says "printer not installed"

Lets start over.
Go to Start/Printers and Devices. Right click and Delete any printers you have listed here. Except Adobe PDF MS XPS, and OneNote
Now go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc, Right click the devmgmt results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Device Manager, are there any devices with Yellow Flags? If so, right click and Uninstall. Expand Imaging Device, If the Canon printer Scanner is shown here, right click and Uninstall it. If there is a Printers Device Expand it, and right click and Uninstall any printers.
Now go to Start/Search and type appwiz.cpl and press enter. In Program and Features uninstall any Canon software. Unplug the USB cable from the Computer End and restart the computer.
Download and install the Driver from the Canon web site: Canon PIXMA MG2965 Driver Download | Canon Driver Support During the install, it will ask if you want to install Wirelessly, or over USB, Choose USB. During the Install, it will tell you when to plug in the USB cable, do not plug it in before. Once the driver has finished installing, and the printer installs, go to Devices and Printers Right click the Canon printer Choose Printer Properties and Print a Test Page. If this fails, do the install again, but this time, choose Wireless. The Canon Printer should now be listed a second time with it's Wireless IP address.

I followed this step by step. Still no installation.

1) under Devices and Printers only the printer showed (not Adobe PDF MS XPS, and OneNote)

2) No devices showed a yellow flag

3) No Imaging Device

4) No Printers Device

5) When uninstalling all of the Canon software the PC shut down and rebooted and tried to install Windows update drivers. I stopped that process

6) Downloaded and installed Driver only software successfully

7) Went to Printers and Devices and clicked on Printer Properties - message came up (as always) "Printer Driver not installed on this computer"

8) Tried to print test page - message said "Test page failed to print - would you like to use troubleshooter? access is denied"

9) I then tried to install drivers wirelessly. Got message "printer not detected on the Network"

In your steps on post #11 I do not see at what stage the printer was turned on and the USB cable was plugged in?
The printer should be powered on, during the Install, the Driver setup will say when to plug in the Printer. During this stage, the driver setup will recognize the printer. and add it to Devices and Printers, If it doesn't, stop here.
If it installs At this stage you should be able to right click it in Devices and Printers/Printer Properties. If so, then you can then press the Print a Test Page button.
If that doesn't happen, Repeat all steps for Uninstalling, in post #9 up until the Canon software uninstall. Instead, use Revo Uninstaller. Be sure to use the Advanced method to remove ALL of the Registry files pertaining to Canon.
Now before proceeding to installing, run ALL Windows updates. After that is done, go to Start/Search and type CMD, Right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type SFC /scannow and press enter. This will replace and missing or corrupted system files. If it repaired all files,
Proceed to the install, be sure to not plug in the USB until told to in the Driver install.

During the previous install I did leave the printer on and plugged the cable in when prompted.
The printer was added to Printers and Devices. When I right clicked on Printer Properties a window popped up saying no printer driver is installed. When I pressed Print a test Page a window popped up saying no printer is installed.

I am now going to follow your other directions.

Still no success. I followed all instructions to the letter except I downloaded the Canon software from the Australian Canon site.

- I "removed" the printer under Printers and Devices

- Used the Revo program successfully. Even removed Canon software from the Recycle Bin and used Advanced

- Ran Windows updates. Is set at auto and found no important updates but I updated optional updates. 1 update not installed. Error code 80070103

- Re-started computer to configure updates

- Went into Windows Resource Protection. Corrupt files were found and successfully repaired

- I installed drivers only

- During the installation the printer was found on the network (serial number matched)

- At no time did the setup ask me to connect a cable. I had the printer switched on and the cable disconnected from the computer ready to go

- the setup was successful??

- message came up that said network setup of printer failed

- scanner installed successfully

- I then plugged in the cable. Windows update did its thing.

- No printer showing in Devices and printers but Scanner is.

- this is wierd. after typing the above line I went back into Devices and printers. Printer now there but Scanner not. Same old messages about drivers and printers not installed under Printer Properties.

I am hung up back here:
"1) under Devices and Printers only the printer showed (not Adobe PDF MS XPS, and OneNote)".
Something is very wrong if all those don't show up as printers. Have you run any reg cleaner or CCleaner on this system? This feels like a damaged registry to me as a whole component of Windows is missing Spunk.

ok I may well be the cause of some problem here but if so only after doing stuff trying to install this printer.

I have run CCleaner for years and yes I usually do a registry clean. I am 99% sure that Adobe PDF MS XPS, and OneNote appeared in Printers and Devices before I started this installation.

The problem may well be that about 2 days ago (out of desperation) I fiddled in the registry while following a post I saw on another site. I did back up the registry onto a disc but haven't figured out how to put it back.

I had no problems at all with my previous HP printer.

Following Windows Support instructions I tried to restore the Registry from the disc.

All looked good till the end when message appeared "cannot import D:\Registry.reg Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes."

Go to a restore point before you messed with registry
I went to System Restore but could not see how to restore to a date manually. I chose the earliest date which was a Windows Update about 1 1/2 days ago but I dont think that was before I messed with the registry.

After the System Restore 3 error windows popped up:

uninstallmonitor.exe - system error
startupinfo.exe - system error
asctray.exe -system error

All 3 said the same thing. "The program cant start because rtl1.bpl is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix the problem"

Not understanding which program I closed the messages and things appear normal.
