We all have to clean and compact the Registry. I have
some very good apps that do just that. Also, after
I run my Reg Cleaners I usually do a manual search
for any junk that did not show up during the Registry
scan.

The problem I have is that after compacting the Registry
everything listed in my Start Menu is alphabetized. I
DO NOT want my Start Menu alphabetized! I arrange
all the folders and their contents according to which
apps I access most frequently.

Obviously, I can't stop cleaning and compacting the
Registry. Is there a way to preserve the Start Menu
order? If not, maybe there is a way to backup the
Start Menu so that I can restore the original order
after I clean and compact the Registry.

If you can't control yourself, it's ok to tell me that
your Reg Cleaning and compacting apps would never
do such a horrible thing! I'm not going to list the
Reg Cleaners I use because I don't want to argue
about them. All I know is, they have never deleted
a Registry entry that has caused any of my installed
applications to malfunction. That's good enough for
me. Besides, I'm a fairly good Reg Hacker and would
recognize most items listed in a Registry scan. If
any looked important I would not let them be deleted.

Use the sort order to your advantage

and preface each folder with a number ... 00- thru 99- ... this will keep them in the order you want.

Thank You Chevy, I numbered Them All!

I've always known that Windows would keep a list in order
if it was numbered. The assigning of a number to all the
items in the Start Menu seemed overwhelming. Well, I
finally did it!

Now, I can clean and compact the Registry and the Start
Menu order does not change. I always thought there
might might be a Reg Hack that would prevent the Start
Menu from changing. Actually, there is one, but it doesn't
prevent the Start Menu from being alphabetized after
compacting the Registry.

Here it is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

You add the DWORD "NoChangeStartMenu" and give it
a value of "1."

This will complelety lock up the Start Menu. Nothing can
be moved, deleted, etc. Unfortunately, it does not cure
the problem of Start Menu reordering after cleaning and
compacting the Registry.

Your solution seems to the only one, Chevy.

Thanks again!
