Motherboard: ASUS P4S8X-X
DVD Drive: HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8 - set to slave
New Hard Drive: WD EIDE 320GB (WDC WD3200AAJB-00J3A) - No jumpers, using Single/Master setting.
BIOS set to boot from CD/IDE

Hard drive is on the end of the cable to Pri IDE and DVD is in the middle.

This machines hard drive went dead, did have XP as the OS.

I put in the new hard drive and when I go into the BIOS, everything appears to be recognized correctly. When I boot up all I see is 'Select A Key to Reboot'.

Not sure why it's not booting from the DVD. Any ideas?

tell about the xp cd, is it the full retail version, upgrade, oem or a recovery? Do you have your boot setting with cd first?

when you boot, after power on try tapping the space bar several times until you get past the post. There should be a press any key to boot from disck when a dvd is loaded at boot but for some reason it does not always appear.

finally if the above does not work, what about the cd drive, when you power on does any lights come on it? if not, recheck its cables.

Yes, the CD is a purchased version, not even OEM, its the full version.

I tried tapping on the spacebar but all that does is reboot the machine (hence the request...press any key to reboot).

When I boot, the green light does come on the DVD. The green light stays on from the time I start the machine until I see the 'Select any key to reboot'.

Figrured out what the problem was...there was dead short in between the keyboard and the chair...meaning, the problem was me :upset:

Basically, in the BIOS setup, for the Primary Slave device I had not reselected the CD-ROM, therefore it could not read the DVD. Duh!

Thanks!
