I had the same problem ... they were in just about every folder taking up space. I moved them to my Recycled folder until I found out what program inserted them & that they weren't required.

Let's try the easy way first.

From the program list below, download Spybot. After installation, have it check online for update, then have it scan for problems. Fix everything in red.

You may need more cleaning, but post your progress before we do any Step 2 work.

Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard (the link will take you to the Blaster page. The menu bar at the top will take you to the Guard page. These two programs, written by the same developer, work hand-in-hand to protect you from invasions).

Adaware
Ad-aware - Software - Lavasoft

I run both of these, as they occasionally find something that the other did not.

Additionally, Microsoft has made some poor choices about default settings in the OSs, resulting in multiple security weaknesses. Gibson Research has a number of little programs that will help you close security holes without having to edit your registry, wander My Computer, etc., just to get secure. I highly recommend this resource.

The secret to running these programs is to update at least weekly! Update Adaware and Spybot before you run a scan every time. Don’t forget to update Blaster and Guard when you are doing your maintenance. Make sure the antivirus software us up-to-date. Put a note on your computer reminding you to do it!

Stay safe! Enjoy the WWW!

Removing PPThumbs.ptn files

I found I could go to My Documents through Window Explorers, click tools, then click folder options, then click view. I checked the option for no cache and also the option to show hidden files since mine were hidden documents. Now I can delete the unwanted PPThumb.ptn files as I come across them. Since I clicked no cache, they have not come back. I understand they do not hurt anything, just take up room, so if you don't mind having the ones in your folders that are there, you can click the hide option and they will stay but not be seen.

Once I got rid of the PPThumb files I then copied to a clean CD and it came out clean.

Hope this helps you.
