My computer was really realy slow today so I shut it down and started up again; it is now stuck on that screen that appears right before it asks me for my password, i.e., Windows XP is on a black screen. I have a Compaq 5102 US with the maximum amount of memory it can hold, which I believe is 256. Any ideas on how I can get it fully up again?

try to put it in safe mode and start back with the last known good....

Thanks, but I tried it in all possible modes from that screen and still I get the same thing--just the black screen with the Windows XP logo, and the blue dots scrolling scrolling scrolling to the right, indicating that it is trying, but there it sits.

remove the added memory
try it again
dont be surprised if the 250 watt compaq psu took a dump.

I lied!!! I tried it is safe mode last of all, and let it sit for a half hour, and I got to the password screen. It is very very slowly loading up right now. What should I do to safguard it? How do I check how much memory is working?
