I have a GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard and it needs a 24 pin main power connector. Why is there less 24 pin power connector and more 24 pin motherboards.

Also how much of wattage does my motherboard need if im going to an

20 pin is the old ATX architecture (pre-EPS)

24 pins is for EPS, and the extra 4 pins supply 75 watts of auxilary power to the PCI-e ports
