Power Supply Fried?

hey,

I recently bought a new motherboard, CPU, DVD-Rom, and hardrive. I was planning on using my old case and power supply that i was using in my previous computer. I know that the PSU was working only a few days before i installed all the parts. I am by no means a PC expert but i know enough to install those parts. Once everything was installed i was almost 100 percent sure everything was connected right and everything was connected firmly, i.e: no loose connections. When i tried to power on there was no sign of electricity at all. None of the lights went on none of the fans moved. absolutly no noise.I changed the power cord to the PSU and changed outlets. Im running a 500W power supply so i know that power is sufficient. So basically i want to know what possibly could be causing this? Is there any part that if not hooked in right will cause this to happen? Is my Power Supply completly fried? if so how is that possible? Basically i just want to elimante any possibilities that could be causing this and what is wrong before i fork over the money to buy a new PSU. I would really appreciate your input and thoughts, because i have none left.

Thanks.

some 550w are only equivilent to a quality 250-300w it all depends on the brand
when you upgrade you always check before buying that you have enough power to run what you intend to build and it is rare you do not have to include a new power supply in the build
the amps are more relevent than the watts, especially on the 12v line
put your specs into here

based on a quality psu and add 30% to the end result
read this and you will be enlightend on power supplies

post your system specs including the details from the label on the side of the power supply
I put my specs into there and it tole me i needed a 217 w power supply. i am running an AMD athalon 3200+ regular motherboard, dvd rom , 7200rpm hardrive and a nvidia 5500 gt, soon to be a 7800. I also have 3 LED fans. I think my current 500W power supply would be sufficient. Can anyone think of any other reason why my pc wouldnt start? Is there anything i could have hooked wrong that could cause this?

thanks again

Did you put the 4 pin square molex power plug in the motherboard from the power supply?
You might need to take the parts out of the case, place the motherboard and supply on a sheet of cardboard, with just the bare hardware essentials, and jump the on/off pins on the motherboad with a paperclip.
A case short has to be ruled out.
But as Dai mentioned, an off brand 500 watt supply isnt golden.
if you want the safest road >>>> go to bestbuy or staples or compusa and buy an Antec 550 tru-power 2 PSU

if thats not your problem you can return it!

be warned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dont buy any other maker they might have other than Antec or Enermax DONT let those wing nuts tell you a Deer or Dynex, Dyna is just as good, but more affordable!! they are full of peanut oil!

I have seen them do that with my own eyes & ears I reamed the dude a new kiester, but I doubt it did any good! The goof ball sold a guy a very high powered video card and then sold him a garbage PSU unit to power it!

goodluck post back with your findings
So,

i pulled my power supply out of the pc and connnected to the outlet and checked it with a volt meter and there was no power what so ever. Im not sure if this determines anything at all. IM going to buy a new PSU tommorow. I would like to know if theres anyway that any of my new parts could be damged because of this. the last thing i need is to have a fried processor or motherboard.

thanks,

Did you switch the power supply on when it was pulled out?
You're only way to check h/ware damage would be to test in another known good system or get the new PSU and run them all as usual.
hey,

I did switch the PSU on when i took it out. I dont have another pc to test it in. Im going to buy a NEW PSU in a bit. If that doesnt work ill simply take it back. Ill update my results in a bit. Thanks for all the help.
