Possibly infected

984 Views 10 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  nasdaq
Before I request help from the Windows 7 forum, I'd like to make sure that my computer is (not) infected with malware that might be the cause of the problem.

Last week, I attempted to update Windows (Ultimate, 64-bit), a long-overdue process since I had problems with it before. This time around, once I restarted the computer, Windows froze on the loading screen. After waiting five or ten minutes (just in case), I restarted my computer. The recover program came up and, after a long while of it trying to fix Windows, I eventualy opted to set it back to a restore point. The recover program said that all of my restore points were invalid, yet by some miracle Windows booted up after another restart and the restore seemed to be successful. However, every boot up over the course of the last week took about seven minutes for the computer to load!

Then more (minor) problems started. Yesterday, my system was lagging for no apparent purpose from the get-go despite restarts. Today, I started up my computer and found out that Windows Live Messenger wasn't connecting. When I tried to download the file to reinstall it, an error popped up saying I couldn't save it because I "cannot change the contents of this folder," regardless of which folder it was. Again, by some miracle it decided to work for me. I'm now currently uninstalling WLM, but both of these occurances seemed very odd.

I suspect this is more of a Windows 7 problem rather than malware, but figured that malware would hinder any fixes. Because of that, I would deeply appreciate someone taking a look and making sure my system is clean.

Thank you!

3. Do not install any other programs until this if fixed.

How to : Disable Anti-virus and Firewall...
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt
Note:
Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link --> How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

For AVG antivirus and anti-spyware security software users only.
Due to recent changes in AVG and how it interacts with CF, AVG must be uninstalled to run ComboFix. You will get a message from CF stating such.

If AVG will not uninstall, it is first recommended to uninstall it with this AppRemover by Opswat. The AVG uninstaller can be downloaded from here > AppRemover.exe Go to their homepage and you will see they have support for removal of other AV's as well AVG appremover tool.

Hi nasdaq, thanks for the reply. I'm just heading out the door, but I will have these steps done this evening.

Quick question: may I reinstall AVG after I finish running Combofix, or should I wait for your okay?
Wait for my reply. I may have to used ComboFix again.
I couldn't scan the Gun64.sys file. Both of the sites said the file didn't exist. The file is still there, but it seems like the websites can't register its existance.

When I downloaded Combofix, Windows gave me the "cannot change the contents of this folder" error again. I just restarted the download and it worked.

These files are from the Logitech QuickCam. They should have been deleted after a good installation. Nothing should be installed and work from a Temporary folder.

Do you have such a Webcam and is it working normally?
Are these files present in some other Logitech folder?

===

Please restart the computer normally.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

Code:
File::
c:\windows\system32\Gun64.sys

Driver::
Gun
Save this as CFScript on your desktop.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Please let me know what issues persists.

I have a Logitech Pro 9000 webcam, not a Quickcam. The one I have is working normally. I couldn't find those .dll files in any other folder.
ETA: Whoops, seems like the Pro 9000 is called a Quickcam. :redface:

Seems like the downloading error is gone, but I've only done a couple of files since last time. My system is booting up and running faster, too. I'm a bit hesitant on trying to update Windows again... Assuming the log is clean, do you think it would work this time?

I had to attach the log because it was too many characters for one post.

This is good reading. If all is well you may not want to change anything but if you ever need it you should refer to it.
Failure to install SEP client on Windows XP SP3 | Symantec Connect
===

Time for some housekeeping

  • The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

    Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

    ComboFix /Uninstall
===

A new system restore point will be created.

I suggest you try the Windows Updates and if something goes wrong you can always restore this latest point.

For the record, I have Win7, not XP :)

I tried updating Windows today, but the same problems occured. I had to restore the system back. Additionally, upon installing AVG, the bootup time doubled... Maybe switching to another anti-virus would fix that, or perhaps it's just normal.

Since this doesn't seem like a malware issue anymore, should I start posting in the Win7 section?
