Are you experiencing any problems?
Ive Noticed My Computer Is Running Very Very Slow.
Let's start out doing this.

Download CWShredder and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Download and install Spybot S&D. Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it here. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Also

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/enterprise/products/housecall_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the free online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. If any are not cleanable, copy and paste the infected files here. You may also use Panda ActiveScan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan. Post the log from the Panda scan here.

Please post both logs.

please look at the above two posts (hjt, panda) :dead:
Hello spod,

Before we continue here, we need you to do something for us. :smile: You still have not updated to Windows SP1a as was advised in your previous 2 infections. Until you update Windows, you are wide open to infection and you will continue to get infected.

IMPORTANT!:
Before we can proceed any further, please visit the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2 (SP2). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system.) At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately it’s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update Windows XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

Once you've implemented the update, run another scan with HijackThis and post the log here and we can continue with the cleansing process.

windows service pack 1a

i have ie v6.0.2800 installed in my computer already .....and when i try to download sp1a it gets cancelled? im not sure wether i have the updates or not?
Download and install this first: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/network.mspx

Now try again to update to SP1a.
i tried to download sp1a it downloaded / extracted then during setup asked if i agreed to comply....then evrything disapeared and i got a message saying service pack 1 setup error / cancelled.....i tried more than one time and it seems like after extraction within 10 seconds it disapears and i get the cancellation message?
Ok spod, let's do an initial cleaning and see if that will allow the SP1a update to go through.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. Again, you should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Ok spod, let’s continue. :smile:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this.

Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ to update manually.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Ctrl-C:

C:\WINDOWS\deskbar.ini
C:\WINDOWS\inst
C:\WINDOWS\system32\??mbols\regsvr32.exe

Start KillBox.
Go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
Verify that you've done this properly by clicking the dropdown-arrow next to the Full Path of File to Delete field. The filenames you pasted will be found in there.
Select/tick the following:
* Delete on Reboot
* End Explorer Shell While Killing File
* Unregister.dll Before Deleting" if it's not grayed out.
Click the RED X button.

Click [Yes] at the 'Delete on Reboot' prompt. Click [No] at the Pending Operations prompt.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Acceleration Software (StopSign Anti-Virus) It is rogueware (or known to be rogueware in the past) and we highly recommend that you uninstall it. Rogue/Suspect means that these products are of unknown, questionable, or dubious value as anti-spyware protection.
[B]**You do have Kaspersky Anti-Virus installed so you are still protected.[/B]

Iolo (System Mechanic 5 Professional) As you can see in the Panda Scan, it is bundled with Gator and Altnet.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [StopSignSsTsMon] Rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\Anti-Virus\sstsmon.dll",VerifyStatus
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [webscan] "C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\Anti-Virus\stopsignav.exe" -k

Delete the following folders:

C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software
C:\Program Files\iolo
C:\WINDOWS\system32\??mbols

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
-Empty Recycle Bins
-Temporary Internet Files
-Delete Cookies
-Delete Prefetch files
-[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
-Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Reboot back into Safe Mode.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
o If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
o Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'
o If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now as the action and we will see those entries and remove them if necessary.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
* Click Save report.
* Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Reboot back into Normal Mode. Run a scan with HijackThis and post the log here along with the results of Ewido scan.

Out of curiosity, how did you finally get the update to work? Was it after re-registering those 2 .dll's or something else?

Hi spod,

When we're done here, you can download and install free versions of both an Anti-Virus and Firewall at these locations if needed:

Please download AVG Free at Grisoft http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php. Install it and make sure to check for updates.

Please download a free Firewall at ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelabs.com.

Reboot into Safe Mode.

Start Killbox

Copy/paste the following entry into the box:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.dll

Select/tick the following:
* Delete on Reboot
* End Explorer Shell While Killing File
* Unregister.dll Before Deleting" if it's not grayed out.
Click the RED X button.

Click [Yes] at the 'Delete on Reboot' prompt. Click [YES] at the Pending Operations prompt.

Let it reboot into Normal Mode.

You should be clean now. If there aren't any more problems, please proceed with these final instructions:

Reset hidden/system files and folders

Windows XP
===============
Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
* Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
* Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point

Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
* Select the System Restore Tab
* Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Click Apply
* Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
This will prevent any reinfection from any previous restore points.

**NOTE**
Please go back to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection. Please update to XP SP2 and I.E. SP2

In light of your recent issues, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

More information and downloads are available at the following links:

Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

Firefox www.mozilla.org/products/firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.
