Good Morning,

I don't know what caused this but my USB 2.0 pen drive now shows up as a "folder" rather than a removable drive when using "my computer". If I double click on it, nothing happens. I can right click and get a drop down menu. Select "removable portable device" and it works OK. What is causing or caused this mess?

Thanks,

Bill

it is the way your machine decides to read the device. go into your system bios at startup and go into the USB settings menu. change the way it reads certain usb devices (as you would prefer but do not mess it up) if you mess up then restore bios defaults

maybe your pen drive is infected, try to open your usb drive by right-click and selecting "explore" instead of "open", and delete a file named "autorun.inf", now disconnect and connect your pen drive, maybe you should run your antivirus.

Go to Start/Run and type CMD and hit enter. In the Command Prompt type the drive letter of the Pen Drive, lets say F: Now the command prompt should read F:\> Or whatever drive letter it is. Now type chkdks /f/r and hit enter. Now type a Y to dismount the volume. the check disk utility will try to correct the file system.

Hi guys,

The only way I can open the Drive or "folder" is to type Run G:\

If I type CMD the C:\docs and settings comes up.

If I try CHKDSK G:\ I also get right back to C:\ docs & settings

I have formatted it and on the first go round it comes up as a removable drive G:, but on the next try to open it I'm right back to the "folder" icon and it won't open.

Perhaps the icon cache is corrupted. You could try deleting iconcache.db and rebooting.
Other than that, check in folder options (from control panel), file types, and see what the drive icon looks like from there.

Seems I read that these are supposed to be formatted in FAT32 not NTFS.
