Hey guys,

I delved a little too far with my windows xp tweaking and now when it boots up it says there is a file missing....

what i did was go to my computer > view system information > advanced > "start up and recovery" ...clicked on settings button > went to edit and deleted the text

firstly i edited it and i was able to take away the other non-viable options that came up so it did it automatically, but i took it a step further and now it wont get into windows. i have the exact text saved in another wordpad so i thought i would just replace it if needbe but little did i know now i cant get into windows at all.

what should i do?

is there anyway i can 'sneak' into windows, maybe via MS DOS so i can change the text back to what it was?

note, it tries to go to c:\windows but the file is d:\windows because of my partitioning

i would rather avoid having the go to 'repair' windows and reinstall all that **** but if i need to do this can someone explain exactly my best bet.

also, maybe i can do this to get to command prompt then direct myself into windows?

thanks in advance folks :)

Hello Colin, Welcome to TSF!

Let's try doing a System Restore' back to a time/date before this occurred.

Seeing that you can't boot into Windows®, this can be achieved via the Bios/Setup on your computer, to do this, please follow these instructions...

Shut the computer down > Power up the computer > continually tap the F8 Key as soon as you power up; this will take you to a menu with (as well as other items listed), Last known Good Configuration > select this item and follow the on-screen prompts. This should reboot the computer back to before you 'tweaked' it.
Give this a try and post back with the results.

Kind Regards,
